I just bought a B5 A4 (1998) and under the armrest there is a port which looks like it would fit an ethernet cable (like a phone jack only larger). does anyone know what this might be for???

 

its for like a car phone or what not. I've seen pics were they have one of those old massive car phones in the arm rest

i've never seen one equipped with it

but i know some people have modified it to ues their hands free devices

 

I thought maybe thats what it was but its a 1998 not 1992. By 1998 Cell phones were pretty small and didnt plug into anything except chargers

 

haha my 2001 had it. i was hoping audi gave me internet with my car.

theres a way to wire it as a power source. i think i read about it on AW, someone put a light in there, i would make it my phone charger.

 

I have something similar under my armrest, except my plug looks like a USB connection. I could probably hook a USB phone charger up to it... haven't tried it yet though.

 

ok, all this was very interesting, and not so clear what is this for originally??? i have it in my 2000 A4 in armrest and behind armrest next to ashtray for rear seat. would be nice to have handsfree or extra phone charger or if it does go to your cd player wouldn’t be nice to plug your mp3 player there… huh? ... after i get home tonight i will check for voltage on that thing… so does any one know for sure about this port or what part of the car it linking to ???

 

its for a car phone. like the the ones found in the higher class modules and youve prolly seen them in bmw's and benzez.
