struggling with a 95 a4
i came across a 1995 a4 1.8t here in europe for about $ 3,000. im currently stationed here in aviano, italy. anyways, the car looks pretty sharp and clean! what is the price range for these cars? im suprised its falling around $3,000 for this bad boy. what is the stock turbo and boost? are audis reliable? i come across on alot of post coming across problems with their audis. is there anything i should watch out for? the only downfall for me is that this model isnt a quattro. im not even sure if audi had 95 quattros, but it would be nice to have one. i owned a 95 eclipse gsx before coming into the military, therefore an AWD+BOOST audi would be perfect! thanx in advance!
an audi without quattro is not nearly as special as an audi with quattro. so certainly an audi without quattro will have a lower price than an audi audi with.
also, the year is pretty old. i would guess that car has well over 100k miles, probably around 150k. and a 95 is likely to have lots of the reliability issues that nearly killed audi as a company back in the early-mid 90's. it wasn't until the late 90's and 2000 models that audi really stepped up it's reliability and reputation for quality.
i am not the one to ask about when it comes to the technical specs, but don't expect that car to be that fast. even some of the newest a4's are not that fast. mine is a 2002 and it isn't anything spectacular off the line. once its going, its plenty fast though...the new b7 audis (mid 2005 and after) are faster, but are still hardly neck-snapping. but that's what the s4 is for anyways.
i would say that that price is probably a fair one considering the options, year and, the probable mileage for that car.

the car does have 100,000 miles on her, but thats considered average since its a 95 model with an average of 10,000 year. a quattro would be pretty sweet, but this is all i have to work with. is this car pretty fun to drive although it isnt a quattro? i guess the stock boost isnt as high as other boosted vehicles? one last thing, should i take the chance considering the reliability issues? i know it varies from car to car, but if the mid 90 audis did break down a lot, then i'd probably pass up this deal. thanx
If 3000 is all you have to work with, then don't get an audi. Most likely, with any 10 year old car with 100K miles on it, you will have to put in 1500 to fix small things, and get it reliable.
for one thing, if the timing belt hasn't been changed, the car is a ticking time bomb with a 1000 dollar price to change the belt and related parts. Otherwise when it snaps or the tensioner goes, you are looking at 3000 dollars for a head rebuild.
Honestly, if you are on a fixed budget, I'd suggest buying a used Honda or Toyota.
If you do go for the Audi, make sure a mechanic checks it out. Check all the electronics, the control arms and tie rod ends make sure the timing belt has been changed (see the receipt), make sure the turbo is boosting and that the turbo isn't whining. Check the usual, leaks, make sure that the fluids look OK (orange/pink for the coolant), no blue smoke, oillooks OK. etc.
Drive the car slowly over bumps. Front end clunks + tie rod ends. Listed for squeeks when going over bumps = control arms.
Make sure it is turbo, because there are non-turbo A4, early on esp in europe.

i just got back from test driving the car, and it went pretty smooth. there were no obvious things wrong with the car, except i felt like the clutch is not all there unless audi's clutches engage high? the turbo was replaced 2 years ago, and it is strongly spooling. the timing belt, water pump, and front rotors were replaced last year or so. other than that, i dont see or feel anything wrong with the car except for the clutch. i'd start rolling in first gear around 1800 rpm. i could rev it a little higher, but that shouldnt be necessary. any thoughts?
check the CV boots.... common to be ripped/torn
push down on each side of the car to listen for squeaks, clunks, and other sounds.
Could have bad control arms, CV joints , bearings or otherwise
