this may be a long shot, but on my vw gti i had a annoying clicking noise that sounds alot like what your problem is and turns out to be my valves were sticking

I had a very similar issue when I had my VW. I was guessing either your valves or lifters could be sticking. How often do you check your oil? Maybe if your oil is getting low, that could be another reason for the ticking.
could easily be sticking valves but doubt the oil pump ( you would have the oil light on )
sticky valves/lifters has a metallic click and is easily heard from the valve covers,
header/exhaust manifold would have a totally different sound and more easily found because it would come from the side of the engine

ok, just thought i'd throw up an update.
so i gave my car a good seafoam treatment, got an oil change with good oil n filter. much to my surprise, my lifter noise is now worse. how low does oil pressure have to get before the light will come on?? the only thing that i can think of is the pick up line is slowly getting more clogged up. any ideas???? considering doing a diesel flush and seeing if that helps.

now that's a strange thing having done an oil change and its worse[:-]personally I would have the oil pressure checked as this will tell you if the pump is bad or pickup pipe is blocked ( which im beginning to lean toward ) so it could be the oil sump pan of for investigation
they do have flush treatment stuff and I prefer the type that has to be left in there for at least 50 miles ( not the stuff you put in there and run engine till warm )

well i figured that seafoam would break down any sludge that was in my engine but apparentlyit didn't break it down enough. might try a atf or diesel flush, apparently they work wonders.
