Default Stumped with battery

My battery was only at like 10volts this morning. have no clue why, no lights were left on, but the cells are not filled either, so I figured this was the problem. I tried to jump it off, but when I connected the cables, it had no affect. I made sure the cables were properly attached. What is weird is that I used a meter to guage the voltage on the cables coming from the donor car. It was fine, like 14 volts... When I attached the cables, I metered the posts of my car, and it read 10V again-with the cables attached! How can this be if the donor car was attached to my car's battery?? I tried to start my car, but no change in anything. I have never experienced this ever, with any car I have tried to jump off. I am going to buy a new battery today,. but if anyone can help with this dilemma or shed some light, it would be great. Am I an idiot here-or is this normal

After connect the cables, did u wait about 10min before you try to start your car again ?

Are you sure that problem is about battery ? Maybe starter or another problem ?

Are you sure that the cable u are using is well condition ( that happens to me before!! bad cable direct you wrong direction)

I tried all different approaches. I left the cables connected with the donor car running for like 10-15 mins, hopeing it would charge my battery. That did not work. I do not think it is the starter. The starter would not have the affect on the battery reading 10Volts.

Well, I thought the smae thing, but I was able to start it once. I metered the cables and it read about 14volts, so the alternator was kicking the correct voltage out. I am thinking the battery is at fault, but just wanted to see if anyone else could input anything that would make sense.

they are brand new. And i checked them with the meter. Voltage checked good when I metered from the donor car. I just disconnected the neg and metered it right there. Was ok.

if you're measuring different voltages at each end of the same cable, then it would have to be your cables...but that doesn't explain why your car is dead...are you absolutely sure you didn't leave any lights on in your car?

Could be a dead cell in his battery.

i am hearing a lot of "Dead Cell" responses, which makes sense. I will replace the battery and let you all know how it goes.
