My friend gave me the vag com cable and the program, but i cant scan my car. He scanned it with his laptop but when i try to do it with mine I cant get the com port tested, have no clue why, he told me that my windows cant read the cable prob, can that be it, what do i do, please help, thanks.

you'll need a driver for your cable -

if he had the full program it can only work on one computer and cannot be transfered between computers or people

 

Driver? If it's serial then NO you don't need a driver IIRC... my ebay cable works fine with vag version 3.11 and 4.09

 

if an aftermarket headunit is installed im properly the vag reader wont be able to connect

and given the same scenario this can also do damage to the vag reader (reason why some shops wont hook it up to your car if you have an aftermarket headunit)

 

Thanks Lazer for clearifing your point. I've never heard of that before. Wood_e, yes serial cables don't use drivers but most cables are USB now - since serial is being phazed out. My new laptop doesn't even have a serial port. And I was also speaking from experience. When I first tried to use my ebay cable the program did the same thing to me and after I installed the drivers it worked just fine.
