the quesetion is what the hell kinda cat do you have because only the top one is welded on mine. And i clearly remember cause it was one of the ones i tried to cut the bolt head off of. But then again it was well over 3 years ago.

its hard to tell from the pics but if you look each pic shows 2 of the 3 nuts welded onto the cat

in the second one you can kinda see the third nut if you look really close

ORIGINAL: hiwords

haha. u can do anything. just make sure u check the emission laws in ur state first cuz if u violate a emissions law, u'll have a pretty court case in ur hands
4sure if that dosent work in willing to put the cat back on when its emissions time or re register the car,
does 034 provide a quality testpipe or is theyre something i should be looking out for?

034 makes very good stuff...

im big into name brand but on a test pipe? its a round, hollow pipe... if they didnt make it the right shape or put the o2 sensors in the right spot.., thats different.. i got a creative TP on a group buy... no better or worse.. does the job

Chaos is right again. all 3 nuts were welded to my cat on the 2000 a4 1.8T.

98 A4 - you're in for a fun-filled week. if the flex pipe didn't break yet, it probaby will soon. everyone i have talked to said they crapped out at in the 130-170k miles range. you don't want to do that job twice, so my advice is to get a cat back exhaust now if you don't have one already. and buy new metric bolts at the dealership -they are less than $5 for all 3 bolts.

and once you have the test pipe in, its no longer a problem getting to the bolts, cuz you can just drop the test pipe down through the bottom after unbolting it from the turbo. and you have so much more room to get to the bolts.

Hey for future reference on stripped nuts. Craftsman makes a stripped nut remover set that is one of the best investments I've ever made. I don't use it often, but it beats the hell out of having to cut nuts off once they're stripped. Before you guys go all crazy on me, I know what you're talking about and all the nifty tools in the world will not fix the situation about the "nuts" on the bottom of the cat being welded. Check it out!
