timing belt
timing belt tensioner
tensioner roller
idler roller
water pump
thermostat
accessory belt (or if you have a 1.8T: a/c belt, p/s belt, alternator belt)
And why would you need to change all these? To save labor - and waste money on replacing something you may never need to replace? I have had timing belts replaced on my previous cars and never had anything else done along with that.

Belts may be reasonable, as they would wear out anyway (although probably not at 60K miles). Water pump surely seems like a waste to me - I have never had one (or heard of anyone have one) go bad, even in 160K miles. Thremostat - the same. You don't save any labor - and why would you want to replace a part that works perfectly fine? When (and if) it goes bad, then it's time to replace it. Rollers & tensioner - don't know... any rationale there?

You need to replace all that because of one of those items fail, then you have catastrophic failure, just the same as if the belt broke. Rollers and tensioners do wear out, some get wobbly, some get slack, some seize up. If any of that happens ant it throws/shreds the belt then you are up the creek. It all runs off the main belt.

I did my own timing belt, but out of curiosity I called a few places to see what it would of cost me if I had it done somewhere. Cheapest place I found was the local Audi/vw speciality shop parts and labor they wanted 700$ which I think is reasonable for the job. So I'd say your getting a decent deal.

. I love people on this forum who belive they know everything. You can either spend the little extra money now and do it all and do it right. Or you can spend just as much or more to have it ripped apart again later.

BWAH HAHAHAHAH ....... HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. .......... HAHAHAHAH... OHHHHH I'm in pain. I take it your one of those guys who waits until they have herpes before worrying about huh?

You need to change these so to avoid future damage. It's called.... wait for it..... preventative measures. Everything there is mission critical and all of them (excluding thermo & a couple of the belts) will kill your motor if they break or fail. Prime example... click back to the forum and scroll down.... to "I'm cursed" from BASHAWIN... there's a water pump failure for you. We do this because it protects our baby's.

Oh yeah perhaps look at doing front seals too.

P.S. I do agree with the thermo comment though. No need to do it yet.

HEY MUCHNIK

Funny you should say that, my car had 165K when the timing belt started to crack and the metal was busting loose. Oh and the water pump went at 130K and the thermostat at 140K (but I left it in cause all it does is run cold in cold weather). Oh and one of my pulleys devo'ed a squeak too.

So yeah, really I guess you could make it a little longer (I think really the dealer changed the belt at 60K) but uh, most people don't check their timing belt once a week.

Anyway, shokan.com has the a4, a6 kit for 200$ with all the stuff and considering the water pump is 100$ and the timing belt is 80$ stand alone, it seems like a good deal to me.

yea im not gonna wait till stuff starts to go out before i replace it, if i wanted to be cheap i wouldnt have bought an audi. heres another question though i was looking at my belt and it looked pretty good and some of the bolts that hold the clutch fan on were scratched and warn a bit, this makes me wonder if the previous owner had replaced it. so is there any thing i can check to see if this has been done? or should i not make any assumptions and just go ahead and do it?
