timing belt
I heard the thermostat is a real bastard to change in these cars.... so I'd likely do it when I do my TB. Thermostats always go in the dead of winter, with my luck... and I'm out freezing my *** off in my garage trying to change it.
My talons thermostat went 4 times in 3 weeks. Use an OEM thermostat!

The only benefit to changing the thermostat with the timing belt is that you can see where the thermostat is when the radiator and condenser are out of the way. When I changed my timing belt I got the thermostat so that I could change it but decided not too when I saw where the hell it was. I just wasn't up for what would probably be a couple of hours of frustration to remove and reinstall a couple of bolts. I had already been adequately frustrated by my turbo replacement (damn cat bolts). I think I will take the car in and let someone else replace the thermostat.
I take it your one of those guys who waits until they have herpes before worrying about huh?
There are things that need to be replaced before something actually happens, yes, and that's preventative maintenance. There also are things that do not need to be replaced before they die, simply because they may never die. I've seen cars that died (i.e., smth. major) and were thrown away before anything had happened to their thermostats and water pumps.
Again, if you can't think, then even a thermostat failure can lead to an engine damage... and, well, yes, then you better listen to the conventional "dealer wisdom."

No. I am simply one of those guys who think with their own head instead of taking the "wisdom" granted on them by the dealers and repair shops. Sure they want you to buy more. If you don't have your own brain, you just do what they tell you (are you also one of those guys who use "regular" oil and replace it every 3,000 miles, by any chance?)

Just stop. It is something that needs to be done and would cost you much more in the future if it is not done and something fails. Which it has proven time and time again to do. HA I love the fact how you are trying to mock someone who performs the regular maintenance on their car because they take car of it, in order to make it last longer.
You are going to continually get flamed for standing up against hard evidence. But you know what man, you can go ahead and wait.
Actually guys, lets not do it and start listening to "Muchnik wisdom" instead. Screw trained Audi techs at european specialist shops.

Too much (needless) preventative maintenance is purely an American thing.

You get this part wrong. I mock only the ones who overdo it. I don't suggest to underdo it, I suggest to do it just right.

What hard evidence are you talking about? Did you conduct a research and publish it in a scientific journal? Or do you consider "my buddy told me" to be a hard evidence?
No I dont consider what my buddy told me hard evidence. I am talking about the hard evidence of countless posts on this forum, pics n all, of those who did not change it in time and have experienced huge problems and very large repair bills. Do some research.
I lived in Europe for many years. Europeans don't change their oil every 3,000 miles and neither do they replace half the engine bay (ok, I'm exaggerating) during a timing belt change.
YOU are a dumbass. I mean european car specialists. Exaggerating doesnt help your argument it only hinders it. So cut the crap because your argument is weak and unproven.

Oh so now there is some discrimination here as well?
