Timing belt

My mechanic tells me I need to change my timing belt and water pump at 60k just for preventive maintenance. Initially i thought it was 80k. Any ideas? I have an 02 1.8T

book states 180,000 kilometers ( 111,846 miles ) depending on service history and how its been driven, 60k is a little early I think but its a personal choice

I'd also say 60k is early. Don't wait too long tho because of the mess it will cause.

I had mine done at 84K mi. The origonal belt was in good condition. The stealerships recommend 90K mi.

For an 02 I would say that if you did it at 80k miles, that would still be preventative maintinance and semi early-you have the updated tensioner so early failure of it isnt likely.
