Default Timing Belt

Hi,

I have a 1998 A4, 2.8 V6 5v quattro and I notice it is due a timing belt change. I am a mechanic by trade and am wondering are the special tools as dictacted by Audi are absolutely necessary. I have changed many timing belts in other vehicles without the tools.

Thanks
