Timing Belt noises
Need some suggestions here guys, had the timing belt and tensioner done on my car a while ago and me and the machanic have got a bit stuck.
It's all on correctly and there is nothing visibly wrong, but from cold the belt makes a sort of scraping noise. It's not rubbing on anything which was my first though.
It's an intermintent noise, ie does it once every revolution of the belt. If i lube the belt with silicone it'll stop for a while.
This only occurs when cold and once its warmed up there is no noise atall.
Anybody have any suggestions or know of this happening?

all solved, just whacked another tensioner and belt on there, the new one fitted from Audi i might add was over tensioning the belt! Good to know isn't it.
Edit, not solved it's doing it again.
Only when cold?? Anybody?

What all did your mechanic replace? He should have replaced the timing belt, water pump, tentioner, idle roller, tensioner roller, and thermostat.

Would any of those others cause a noise though? It comes from the top pulley.
Audi recommends 120,000 service on timing belt for 2001 1.8t AWM engine. Best thing to do is pull off the timing cover and check for rubbing on the inside of the cover. Also check the front of the block and belt for rubbing. If you have a lot of dust like particles the belt maybe coming in contact with something. The bearings on the tensioner and guide pulleys and water pump have been known to make noise when wearing.
The biggest problem is that this engine is known as an Interference Engine. That means if belt fails damage to engine most likely will occur. Doesn't mean it will though.
