Default Timing Belt Question

I have a 2001 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro and it currently has 87,000 miles on it with the stock timing belt. In what mileage range is safe until it needs to be replaced in fear that it could break? The wires, spark plugs have been replaced, but nothing else.

Two things you should know about this vehicle:

A. For the last year, it has not been driven much.
B. It has never been driven hard (previous owner 50+ in age and claims that it was used on the weekends for a smooth ride around town for errands.)
C. Never had mechanical issues.

What are some clues to a failing timing belt? (Not that I'm going to drive it until it breaks but just to be safe)

we have had members with 1.8t's have there's break before 50k - you dealing with a known issue - your MY has the updated tensioners so you can maybe risk a while longer if you want. but if it was me I would get it done soon or do it myself.

no real signs of failure, since the Timing belt itself doesn't usually fail. Its the tensioner that breaks and allows the belt to jump causing the valves to hit the pistons

Is it easy to do yourself if you have such items as a step by step instruction manuelor if you have a medium knowledge of combustion engines?

ASAP!!!!!!

Its not the belt, its the tensioner that fails. There is really no signs, it will just break one day, and then you are risking valvetrain damage, and either replacing the engine, or an extremely expensive valvetrain job.

Are you from IGN.com? Or another site?

I heard the "94k service" is when a lot of people get that stuff replaced is what I've read and heard from a couple of private sellers. However, this is very controversial topic.
