Default Timing belt question

Pretty much everything is installed, my uncle is checking everything over, and says he doesnt like the new tensioner, because it doesnt want to go down after he turned the pulley away with an allen. It was compressed before but now moved up when the pressure from the pulley was released, and now that same pressure (provided by the T-belt itself) isnt strong enough to push the tensioner back down. He then takes the old one and says see how this actuates up and down easily? Im not sure what to do, i say its just a new very stiff spring and should be left to do its job, and will one day actuate like the old one when it has been worn. Any input? I want to punch him in the face right now.

Ok we took the tensioner out, its completely frozen. Now my question is, is it ok to put the old one in if it seems to be just fine??

Looks like ill have to wait till after xmas to get a replacement.

personally the thing that fails in the 1.8t is the timing belt tensioner, i wouldnt take a risk and just get a replacement if possible. otherwise id look into and see if the one you pulled is the updated model or the older one which is notorious for failing before the 80k service mark. if its newer id feel safer putting the old one in but a new one is always a better idea. also are you sure the new one oyu have is defective.

Problem is fixed, took apart the tensioner. Looks as if the spring went to far out and got stuck, so we just reset it and it is fine. Almost finished now with this project, probably have the puppy running tomorrow.
