Default timing belt/tensioner/water pump... whats necessary

Hey guys, its time for me to change my timing belt, but my mechanic told me I should be changing the tensioner and water pump, and to expect about 6 bills for the job. Seems reasonable but I was wondering if putting off the tensioner/water pump is alright on a car with over 200 KM and just doing the belt? Cant recall what he said but apparently this will result in tension being taken off then reapplied to the other parts and have a bad result. Give me some input thanks

Your mechanic is right.
Timing belt
tensioner
idler pulley
water pump
ribbed belt
V-belt
antifreeze G-12

Not sure what 200KM = in miles, but if its time to do it, definately dont put it off. There is absolutely no point in doing just the belt since you have to take it all appart to get the belt on/off anyway. The tensioner is right there along with the roller and you should do it all at the same time, including the waterpump. $600 doesnt sound bad for a mechanic to do considering the dealer will charge at least double that. If you have tools, a DIY article and a spare 5-8 hours, you could do it yourself and save a lot.

the idea of doing it myself sounds appealing until I consider the possibility of ******* it up since it would be my first time (sound like a virgin huh). I guess Ill get him to do it in a week or so.. hopefully nothing bad happens til then [:'(]

I'd add front cam seals as it only adds 10 minutes to the job.

DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT NOT DOING ALL OF THESE!!! In fact do whatever else you can while you're in there. If you don't you will be doing one by one in the near future and its going to cost you three times as much. This has been my personal experience due to my cheapskate nature. Fortunately I can do my own work. If you do attempt the work the first time may seem a little daunting but it's not too too bad.
