Default Took car to AUDI today for rear wheel bearing

Hey guys,

Recenlty (the past 3 weeks or so) had a VERY LOUD noise comming from the rear right wheel of my 99 2.8 Quattro (Tiptronic). I came to the audiforums and asked around what it might be. The answers were mainly its probably:
A) the rear right wheel bearing or
B) tire noise

I couldnt take the noise any longer so I had no choice to take it to AUDI (i couldnt find any private mechanics that specialize in AUDI's IN TORONTO, CANADA).

After about an hour of dropping the car off, I got a call saying that the wheel was really loose and the guy at audi told me that it MIGHT have caused the HUB to crack. LETS HOPE NOT.

Just wondering if in about 3 weeks of driving with the loud noise, could it cause the HUB to crack? and if so how much do you think it would cost?

ALSO please keep your fringer crossed and hope that it is not a cracked HUB. He said he would let me know soon (by the end of th day)

I just did my passenger side rear wheel bearing with a buddy of mine this past weekend. It took us about an hour and a half to do the entire job. I would have a hard time believing that it would have caused your hub to crack, it's pretty heavy duty. It's not that bad of a job if have or have access to a press.

I have no proper tools so i couldnt dot the job myself. The tech guy said it coudl be either the HUB being cracked or the wheel bearing...I took the car to Queensway Audi...i have never had a problem with them before so...might as well go there...I would have searched for a German auto repair shop however, I had put it off for so far that I didnt want to take any chances.

I drove on bad a wheel bearing for 3 months
lol - I would not recommend that, of course.

A significantly bad bearing could make the wheel fairly loose.

That is too bad, I just did mine a week or so ago and it was not a hard job. The dealer in Oakville quoted me $XXX for the job, so I did it for half the price. Who knows they may find something else wrong with my car and ending up paying double.
I was waiting for your call regarding the ECT but you never did. I could have saved you some cash.
Let me know what it cost you overall. In the future, if you want a dealer to work on your car - go to Owasco. I trusted those guys and they have a mechanic there that is been there for 15 years. He really love his job and he is a nice guy.
There is also a parts guy there that is member of this forum - he too is a great guy to know.

Ok so got the car back today. The audi service guy showed me the wheel bearing, I just wish i had my digi cam to take a pic of it to show you guys. MAN it was a mess. He reminded me that the mechanic never saw a wheel sooo lose. They were amazed how i still drove with it. Also, i new there was a "oil" leak dripping from the back end of my car (99 2.8 Q Tiptronic). He told me it was a "differential leak", got that fixed too. Total cost $543 CAD. I know its alot guys, but I really had to choice. I didnt want to drive the car and ruin anything else.

Dudley, yes I am soo sorry man, I havent called you. I really appreciate the offer (getting my car VAGGED by you) and I will take you up on that . I hope the market value hasnt gone up and I can still get it for a TIMS COFFEE (joking). I will call you probably next week. Just want to get it vagged to see if any codes pop up. Thanks again for the offer.

Also, i know the person on this forum that works for OWASCO, however the drive it a bit far from me ( i live in toronto), i think they are located in whitby right? I would love to get my O2 sensor (front end) changed, just cause I heard it helps with the fuel economy also I would like to get a Throttle body alignment. Jest said that should help if you get minor shivering, which i do. Dudley i was wondering if OWASCO does do that (throttle body alignment) and how much it might run me with the O2 sensor change as well.

Also just a note, when i first got my used 99 2.8 Q, I came to this forum to ask what i should change/replace to help the car run better, so far since summer of 04 I have done this to my car, just wondering if there is anything else left (i know there is probably alot):

1. timing belt/water pump changed (AUDI)
2. Leak from the front end of the car, cant remember it but I think i posted my problem on the forum, at work so i cant search for it right now (ALSO DONE AT AUDI)
3. Air filter (MR.LUBE)
4. Cabin filter (MR.LUBE)
5. Rear wheel bearing (AUDI)
6. Rear Differential Leak (AUDI)
7. 3 Oil changes (1st two done at MR.LUBE and 3rd done at AUDI) all with CASTROL SYNTHETIC OIL, couldnt find MOBIL 1
