Default Tranny Problems.

I believe the clutch is dieing but im not sure because. When the car first starts, the shifts are okay a teeny bit rough for 1st and 2nd, and reverse, but I can deal. When the car warms up and you drive a bit shifting into 1st and 2nd requires some strength and if you want to get into reverse it takes two hands.(thats with pushing the stick down to release R) I dont know what the hell, but I want a silky smooth tranny, I cant even shift quickly because of this problem. 3rd 4th and 5th are perfectly fine though. Another small problem is I hear a rattle in the front of the engine, sounds like one of the rollers for the belt is making noise, any ideas?

No idea what the noise is.

Check the fluid level in the clutch.

Also make sure that your gearbox isn't dry.

Some info on your car would be helpful, such as mods engine year and mileage.

98 A4 1.8T APR stage one, H&R 1.5' lowering kit, neuspeed shocks. 20% Tint.

It doesnt sound like its the clutch thats going bad, that would be more of a slipping issue.

95k miles.
Grr this problem is killing me, is it not a problem replacing the tranny and clutch fluid? For instance in auto trannys it is not so good to change the fluid.

Hah, ahh u have the dreaded tranny problem, 1.8t's and s4 trannies have the same problem, the only way i know of getting it fixed is to get it rebuilt. Maybe someone else had this problem though and found a different solution.
