you can shift CVTs...?
we thinking about the same thing here? contiunously variable transmission?
i thought the whole point of em was there was no shifting involved, just a chain on a cone basically...

you are right, there are no gears on the CVT....
But when you put the transmission into the manual mode what you do is you control where the belt will stop on that cone.
Instead of the trany moving the belt over the cone continiously you tell where it should sit on the cone and until you hit the +/- botton it will stay at the same point on the cone. so it will act like a regular automatic as if it is shifting gears.

So it is actually all software. That is why on the CVT's when you shift to manual mode instead of 1-2-3-4-5 on the front display you have 1-2-3-4-5-6. you can basicly have as many ratio settings as you wish if you could change the software for the tranny....

And this is another why the CVT response time (for shifting in manual mode) is alot faster than the regular automatic ( I have driven both). Because the trany doesn't shift gears, the belt just slides to the preset point on the cone.

From Audi's website....

The electronic-hydraulic control unit for all multitronic assemblies is integrated in the gearbox housing. All the influencing factors from driver, engine and vehicle come together here and are processed in comparison with various mappings into control variables. The Dynamic Control Program (DRP) thus recognises from the position and movement of the accelerator whether the driver has a sporty or fuel consumption-oriented style of driving. The system then selects the transmission ratios for the link-plate chain and transfers the necessary hydraulic impulses to the variator. For the manual mode, the electronics make six pre-defined ratios available that the driver can select at the gear lever or by using paddles on the steering wheel.

Ya the earliest is the 99 B5 with sports package...tip tronic sports shifting with sports steering wheel...

The +/- buttons are on both sides of the steering wheel where your thumbs would rest...

I have 2000 and I love it

I have a question about the CVT that's out now, well a couple of em actually:

1.) How much can they take (I guess their limit would be torque based??)
2.) Is their a way, somehow, to make it an ultraperformance tranny, something that would eat up the conventional Standards;
i.e. can I make it "gear down" the pully arangement to such that my RPMs climb REALLY fast, then when I hit peak horsepower, have the engine stay
that RPM while the transmission slowly adjusts to the speed i'm achiveing?
like the engine spins up to say 5900 RPM (170 hp stock 1.8T, 2001 and up in US) then the engine simply holds the 5900 RPMs, whineing it's little *** off and letting the tranny (CVT) to the adjustments as you keep accelerating at peak HP.

any ideas, dose the CVT even work like that (or dose it ONLY work reliably at certian ratios)???

This option is referred to as the "sport steering wheel". It is a 1200.00 option new. It may be found on any Audi model year 2000 and newer. I have it on my 2000 1.8t A4.
