Default The TRUTH about air box mods and intakes

This write-up is for a 1999.5 A4. But go look at your intake; it is probably VERY similar if not exactly the same. The STOCK air box venting takes air directly from the top of the front grille; this means that it is ALREADY a cold air intake. Since it takes the air from the front of the car it is ALREADY a ram-air system. Plus at the bottom of the air box is an auxiliary intake spring flap. This means that if the front intake gets clogged, or the turbo needs more air, the flap opens and takes air from the engine compartment. The stock air box is already engineered for the things you want to add, sorry, the Germans thought of it before you.
If you want more performance out of your intake there are 3 things you can do.
1.Get a high flow NON-OILED (oil from K&N, and other filters messes up electronics (specifically the MAF)).
2.Clean your mass air flow sensor filament, and the air intake temp. sensor filament. (The cleaner these are the more power you get and more gas mileage you get).
3. If that still isn’t enough, get a lighter tension spring for the auxiliary intake flap (don’t just remove it, that negates your cold air intake.) This will allow more air when the car is not moving.

Yes, most of us realise the air box mod is mostly for the sound. Where is the "air intake filament sensor" though??

i think its the little metal thing on top of the airbox with a few holes in it. thats just a guess considering that's the only other thing on the airbox.

oh wait I think i'm wrong.

The intake temp. sensor is located right behind the throttle body. It has 2 wire filaments that measure the incoming air temp. It can get coated with oil and not read correctly.

The air intake temperature sensor is in the intake manifold. It is intalled through a hole into the manifold about one inch behind the throttle body. The mass air flow sensor is in the air box, it is inside the tube in the airbox. It also has a filament that needs to be cleaned. Both work by heating up to a very high degree then the air that goes by cools it down. the ammount of cooling is determined by the ammount of resistance in the wire. the computer can tell the air temp by the resistance of the sensor. Since these wires get so hot, oil in the air will burn onto them, and reduce their effectiveness. clean them and you should notice a difference in top end power.

What would you reccomend cleaning them with?

A spray electrical contact cleaner, rubbing alcohol, or what?

What works best?

ORIGINAL: thebishop

The mass air flow sensor is in the air box, it is inside the tube in the airbox.
Wrong... The mass airflow sensor is ATTACHED to the airbox and can be removed from the airbox easily.

Clean fillaments with resedue free electronics cleaner.
