Default Turbo for B5 1.8t

Looks like I am going ot have to get a new turbo for my 99 B5. My mechanic is recommending a Garrett Air Research for about 30% more than the stock Audi unit. How much extra boost and kW/HP can I expect to get from the Garrett? Is turbo lag an issue?
Cheers
Arb

BTW I have the GP 132kW (177HP) Quattro.

do you have a manual, and if u want to go with a big turbo u better have some money, u gonna need more then just a turbo, u need programing, injectors and more stuff

i say just go with a K04 upgrade

but if u got the money look into the APR stage 3+

Im not extremely familiar with those but I know a little. There is a few different models of them, chances are you would get either the TO-3 or the TO-4. I can't give you much for hp but itll probably be over 300.

You can put whatever turbo you want on the car if it mates to the exhaust mani but you wont have tuning which is the main part. Where are you from, look into the k04-15, its a direct swap and there is tuning available to the US model A4's. IF you have no intention to mod the car then just put the OEM k03 turbo back on.

5spd manual.

I haven't got big $$ to spend and, to be honest, I am not after a rocket powered car. A bit more power would be good if it doesn't cost too much. As for the Garrett reference, have a look here: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/

ahhh the GT25R, thats a good turbo but it needs better programming
and the fact that the kit uses stock injectors

u can call them i bet they have better HP numbers now casue this kit is old
maybe GARRETT upgraded the programming

Best bet is to replace it with the OEM k03, dealers will be expensive but look around i have one lying around but i dunno if you wanna pay shipping all the way to the down under.

I have the GT28RS.. It's a dual ball bering turbo.. I would highly suggest the .64 a/r instead of the .82 but if you are good at tuning cars.. this is the turbo for you.. It is an amazing piece of art when it works perfectly. Other than that the ko4 will do you just fine.

Honeywell/Garrett Turbocharger

Representing the latest in turbocharger technology, a Garrett Ballistic series turbocharger is the only choice for a premium turbocharger system. APR is unique in that we deal directly with Garrett turbochargers rather than buying turbochargers through turbocharger supply houses.

that's under the description of the APR stage III+ turbo package.. never heard of garret? haha
