Default Turbo Dead?

I've been reading some posts and I believe that may K03 turbo may be dead. I have a couple quick questions in regards to this.

1.) Is there an easy way to determine that the turbo is dead?
The car currently has the acceleration of a 3 cylinder geo metro. I also hear a whine sometimes for a few seconds after the enginee is turned off. Also, when switching between no AC and AC the noise changes? Might have two issues going on? AC pulley seems to be turning fine.

2.) My car is currently chipped with TAP stage 1 chip. If I upgrade to the K04 will this chip work with the K04 or would it be best to get a new programming?

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks!

Dont know about the other stuff, but the noise after you turn your car off could be the fan just spinning for the radiator, and for the AC, it will allways do that. becuase the AC compressor is run off your engine, so when it is turned on, it luggs down your engine. tht sound you hear is the computerputting more fuel into the engine so it still idles well. you will have less power when the AC is on.

I'm pretty sure it's not the fan still running. It is a whining winding down sound from closer to the firewall.

I am that the computer will increase the idle when the AC is on. However, as for my power loss, it is regardless as to whether the AC is on or not. Again, this is a complete loss of power. Pushing on the accelerators results in next to nothing. Even with the AC on there is still some acceleration

The sounds I am hearing sound like a bad/loose pulley? However, I am curious if it is the turbo that is dead, would it sound the same. I hear some other metal tinging noises as well. These appear to be similar to other people who have lost turbos.

I am not necessarily bummed that my turbos is dead. I have been "wanting" to upgrade to a K04, but now it is more of a "need". Easier to get approval from the household finance committee!

I'm just hoping that I don't have two issues such as a bad pulley on my AC condensor.

Thanks!

Get the car scanned for codes even though the CEL isn't on.

The TAP chip wont give you full power from a K04

I've got a Vag-com and ran it yesterday. No specific codes. I have a couple "intermittent" temperature sensors, but those have been that way for some time now...

As far as the chip with a K04 what chip would be better? Also, even if the TAP doesn't utilize the turbo the best would there be any issues running that way for awhile?

Thanks!

chances are the waste gate is shot or the rod at the rear of the turbo is disconnected hence the lack of turbo, don't ask me though I know nothing about turbos

If you have a real vagcom, you can check boost.

Most likely your diverter valve may be shot if you didn't upgrade it when you put in a chip.
There will be no damage to the car is you use the tap chip with a K04

I have the vag com from Ross tech. Will that work. Not sure how to check boost using it. As far as the diverter valve, I replaced ~2000 miles ago when I did a timing belt change. I was still running the standard one and thought it might be shot so replaced it with one from the TT. I also recently put in the "J" valve or whatever it is for the waste gate controller. The car ran fine after both changes for probably 1000 miles and now has nothing. I did check all the hoses to both of the valves and everything appears to be hooked up correctly. That is why I believe it is possibly the turbo. If there is a way to check boost with the vagcom that'd be great.
