Turbo oil line. Do I have to take off the intake manifold?
 

I'm replacing the turbo. I thought it would be a good idea to get the top oil line off and maybe replace it. But, where it attaches to the engine under the intake manifold is nearly impossible to get to. How do you get it off without taking off the intake manifold?

You shouldn't have to replace it, really there is no need to even touch it unless you wanna do it for security purposes. Try removing the coolant overflow and swing it counter clockwise so its out of the way and to the side and try to get at it from there.

That's what I did. I can turn it sloooowly now. The thing is, if that line is clogged I would have no way of knowing it and I'd fry the new turbo. For all I know, that is what caused this one to fail

OK, I'm assuming that if I can't blow air thru it, I better replace it. How do I know if it's ATW, AEB, AUG or AWM engine?

The engine code is printed on a sticker that is on the valve cover...usually at the fire wall end of the valve cover

Mine is engraved in the metal on the head.

All you need is a 3/8 socket with a swivel and you can reach that one easily.

are u talkin bout the oil line on the bottom of th turbo??? i just took the line off the oil pan and pulled the turbo up with the line on it.

NO, the oil FEED line on top of the turbo. It runs over the exhaust manifold, (good placement you smart Germans) behind the engine and connects to the engine under the intake manifold.

No, I socket won't work. At first I took off the intake hose thinking I might be able to get in the long way from up front. That didn't work. Don't bother disconnecting any hoses or wires.

Fortunatly, it wasn't very tight. I stuck a wrench in from behind the engine under the intake manifold. I was only able to turn it a fraction each time, turn the wrench over and turn it alother fraction.
