As you all can see i'm a "newbie" to the site and to the audi world. I'm looking to get a used car going for the summer time and i'm drawn specifically to an A4. I've heard all the bad things about getting one but then again it seems like anything i consider someone has something bad to say about it. Anyhow i was hoping i could obtain some valuable info from all you A4 drivers out there. First i want to settle this 1.8/2.8 feud, can anyone break down which one i should look for with reliability as the main focus. Again, i've heard many maintanance stories but i know that when you're in the market for a used car you're going to have to deal with all the little things no matter what type of vehicle it is. i'm lookinat the 96-00 range, trying to land a 99 preferably. Any advice or personal experiences with buying used audis would be appreciated.

Both cars require strict maintenance, and when followed, are very reliable.

The 2.8 is technically "more"reliable than a turbo, mainly due to a simpler system, less parts to break, it's always the case between a naturally aspirated vs a turbo car.

I have a turbo, its been very reliable for me.

If not interested in modding for speed, get the 2.8. Otherwise get the turbo.

But no matter what, get quattro for sure, and manual tranny, and sport package if you come across one.
