Default VAG "Interface: not found!"

I snagged a serial OBD II cable from ebay. I've downloaded the free version of VAG. I have an HP laptop running XP. I'm getting the following error every time I attempt to test the connection to my '98 A4.

"Port Status: OK
Interface: Not found!"

I've tried everything on the help section of the Ross Tech web page. Has anybody seen this or have any ideas on how to correct it?

some of the cheaper cables on ebay require the use of old software, that's probably your problem

Awesome. Thanks fellas. I probably won't try it for a few days, but I'll let you know how it goes.

I installed VAG-COM 311-2. This cleared up the "interface not found" problem. My new problem is that I'm having no luck communicating to my controllers. My check engine light is on, but no fault codes are returned. I don't think I'm actually communicating with the controllers. I did an Auto-Scan as well as a complete scan of all control module addresses for ISO compliant cables. None of them appeared to have a successful connection. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Negative. It's strictly a serial connection to my COM1 port.
