i just checked out vag-com on ebay price isnt as bad as i thought it was going to be can someone recommend where to buy one, or if someone lives in suffolk county new york, could u help me out, also i have a desktop, and its kind of far from my driveway, is there ant vag-com that doesn't have to be plugged in at the same time as it is plugged into the car?

Buy the hex-com or usb-key cable and the software from them. They are a great company and give good support.

I once used my vag on a desktop 3 stories up, with a simple network cable (cat5?) all the way down to the vag cable which was hooked to the car outside.

Buying the cable on ebay is not a good way to go. You will be forced to use older software, and have to use the old registration system which is a pain. The newer cables from Ross-tech need no registration to use the ross-tech VAGcom software, and can be used on any computer running the vag software..
