As some of you may know, my clutch crapped out on me after having the car for less than 2k miles. The cars got 60k on it. Anyway, I replaced the clutch and kept the stock flywheel. My mechanic was taking it apart today and I had him send the flywheel to be resurfaced. He calls me back and tells me the machinist thinks the flywheel might be toast and I might have to replace it... well, thats another $500 I don't exactly have at the moment.

My question is, after doing some searching, if I can't come up with the money for a flywheel for a few weeks, maybe months.. how safe is it to drive with the stock flywheel? can the flywheel damage my new clutch? for example.. if i drive around with the stock clutch until it no longer works, will i end up having to replace my new clutch aswell?

why would you run the stock flywheel if its damaged? if your gona put a new one in down the road your gona spend even more to have the mechanic open up the tranny again. i got a lwfw for 300 and there are even cheaper ones out there. so you can either spend 300 now or bout a grand or more in a few months...

 

that depends on what made the clutch go bad in the first place? if it was just due to wear and tear and the fly wheel isn't warped then sure it will be ok to use it,
( the machinist thinks the flywheel might be toast ) why cant he give a direct answer? what does he THINK is wrong with the fly wheel

chaos, thats if i don't have the money. where did you get a flywheel for 300 or cheaper? and are they good? I've search and anything good seems to be around 500+

techbod, thanks for the info. i'm waiting for a call back from my mechanic, who's waiting for a call back from the machinist. i'm doing whatever i can to get it replaced with something quality, are most flywheels pretty same in build? or will going with an inexpensive one give me problems anytime soon (less than 50k)?

I bought my southbend to go with my stock flywheel, wouldn't i have to buy a clutch that specifically works for a light fly wheel?

For the record, I hope to go with a k04 or gt28rs in the future, though I'm a novice I don't think my flywheel would matter much, depending on how I drive?!

 

from what I read on the south bend they dont say to change the flywheel so its for stock use,
if your going to get a light flywheel then you would need to buy a full kit

well considering i've already bought the stage3, i'm stuck with buying a oem flywhel.

i'll have to buy the cheapest one i can find and come up with the money.

anyone know of a inexpensive place to buy flywheels, google isn't much help for some reason.

 

eBay or try the breakers yards you can get some pretty good stuff there from accident damaged cars

 

i got my lwfw from southbend for 300. cuz i got a hook-up. but i think the OEM ones they carry are like 500. you could always return the clutch since its never been used and reorder one to go with a lwfw. that is IF you want a lwfw. let me know and i'll pm you my guy's info for you to contact to get a deal (its not a huge deal or anything, i think they sell lwfw's for around 350, but hey 50 bucks is 50 bucks and he might be able to get you some money back on your clutch, i got mine at 10% off. no promises tho)

if your just looking for a OEM flywheel, go to a junkyard and find a wrecked a4 with (relatively) low miles

 

I found a used one that wasn't expensive off a wrecked car.. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and get some more info. It won't come resurfaced though, would using sandpaper really work well?

 

sand paper[:-]use wet and dry with soap that will polish it, you can get different grades of paper as a job lot and not expensive
