Default what i've learned

Hey guys.

I joined the forum last week because I bought a 98 1.8T quattro, and I know that forums are a good place to start learning.

I had a bunch of questions when I joined that I'd love to have just asked, but I know that searching is the better way to go so that questions don't get asked repetitively. So I searched, and found a bunch of answers. I'd like to post my questions and answers from what I've figured, and if anybody wants to correct me on something, or just say "yes" that'd be appreciated.

Q: I've heard that you can chip a turbo audi for fairly large performance gains per dollar. Where? How? Differences?
A: Two main places, and a bunch of others.... APR and GIAC are the most prominent two, where APR is slightly less expensive, and GIAC has free upgrades (in case a bigger turbo is purchased in the future). Actually doing it requires either A) removing your ECU, sending it to APR or GIAC, having it flashed, sent back, and reinstalled... B) driving to an APR or GIAC shop and having them do it in front of you, or C) buying an old ECU pre-flashed by the shop (for quite a bit more money).
In addition to chippingi your ECU, you also need to upgrade your diverter valve. The stock DV will quickly wear out with the higher boost pressures. There are a couple options, and it seems like you either get the stock DV for the Audi TT, the Bosch 710N... which is adequate for a chipped 1.8T running 93 octane, and cheap ($35), or a Forge 007 DV, which is made of higher quality materials, more expensive ($150), more future-proof (in case a larger turbo is ever in the plan), and sounds more like a BOV.

Q: Where can I find a nice boost gauge?
A: APR seems to make a great gauge, though it's a little expensive. It looks great and fits neatly in the center air vent.

Q: What kind of milage can I expect stock for the B5 1.8T?
A: 21/29.

Q: What kind of milage can I expect after it's chipped?
A: This depends on how the car is driven. The chip doesn't hurt your milage straight up, it's the "spirited" driving that might follow a chip upgrade.

Thats all my questions for now... I'm sure I'll have more later. Have I searched efficiently / correctly?

Rob

nce you have a b5, I think everyone on here would say stick w giac....besides that the chip will actually give you 1-2mpg better fuel efficiency...and I went with a autometer VDO boost guage (not the best, but worth the $50(from local auto parts store)) and I put it on my column (total cost w/silicone hose was $70)...oh and when you get a better dv, you will not hear either of them without intake (I am guessing both the 710N and the 007 would sound the same with intake)...

good luck!

quattroa4 - how did you mount the autometer gauge on the A pillar? I don't mind getting a cheaper gauge than APR's, but I dont want some crappy mount that is obviously badly done. (Not that yours was badly done :-P)

Yeah, my set up is not all that pretty, but from where i am sitting it looks great....
My View

as you can see I am more into the whole functionality...I have also seen a few DIYs, where they dremmel out a pvc pipe to replace the center vent...it looks pretty good, and you will save yourself some $...

you have wood trim in a 1.8T?[:-]

the only thing I don't like about your setup is the fact that it blocks part of the speedo. I guess it's going to block something though, either the speedo or the centre display. I think I'll be putting my gauge in the vent because of that. the a-pillar mounts look too ricey for my liking.

Yeah, I cant see 15mph and under, when my seat is completely lowered...I like that then psi is right in front of me, I don't like the idea of it being anywhere but where i put it...besides that I would have to agree with your taste, for me pillar=rice....My car came with wood trim, it's the only one I have seen with it...I find myself knocking on it everyday...haha....
