What kind of engine oil do you use?

Hi all,
I have a 1996 A4 Quattro.
it hasabout 125,000 miles on it.
I live in area where the average temperature is about 35F or below during winter time and about 70F ++ during summer time.
What kind of oil should I use for both winter and summer time.
I currently use Mobil 1 Syntec. I believe its 10W-30
and should i change to 5W-30 during summmer time?
OR, what would be the best one for my car?
Thanks

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

Use what you feel comfortable with. The 2.8L 12v V6 does not require a synthetic oil. I would do 5w30 in winter and 10w30 in summer. I wouldn't go with M1 personally, as its overpriced. Penzoil Platnum and Quaker State Q oils are running GREAT deals right now and probably are the best synth oils for the money.

Right now I have Q Torque Power 10w30 in my A4 with a wix 51333 filter. I chose this because I was done with an Autorx treatment and I wanted an OCI of 8k.

how often do you change your oil?
3 months / 3k or
5 months / 5k ?

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

If you're using non synthetic and a quality filter I would go 5k. Synth oil can last longer.

I like and love amsiol oil which is around the same price as mobil 1. I get mine at napa for 6 bucks a Qt. 5W-40 euro syn. at that hig of miles...OEM filters and syn oil will make her last 100,000 more easy:)

Mobil One Synthetic engine & diff

I wouldn't recommend running a nonsynthetic. I use amsoil 5w-40 with a change around 5k, valvoline is my second option then theres mobil1. The mobil1 filter is a micro filter unlike the old paper ones.

0W30/40 full synthis the best but 5W/30 is standard semi synth

Castrol Full Synthetic 5W-40

personal choice I suppose but a little heavy ( Castrol Full Synthetic 5W-40 )

I use 5w-50, but after hard burnouts realize that 10w-60 will be better choice. And 0w-40 for the winter.

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

Castrol Full Synthetic 5W-40 is VW 502 and 505 approved and specifically made for VW/Audi. Also a personal choice against Exxon/Mobil (Mobil 1 oil) in general.:)

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

Mobil 1 0w-40 full synthetic w/ OEM filter (for my 03' 1.8t). This is what's also recommended by my dealer.

I've used Castrol before in my old car w/ no problems, & have also used Chevron in a pinch. Just stay away from Pennzoil... heard way too many issues with them.

DavidL, what's wrong with Mobil 1?

Used Mobil 1 in the past, engine didnt seem to like it very much... Now using Castrol 5w40 engine loves it... Also have used Valvoline 5w40 with good results...

On more than one occasion Ive actually been recommended to run a non synthetic oil in my 2000 1.8T.

Im in the process of using Auto Rx to clean out the sludge build up (the downfall engineering of our engines) and when its complete I was told its better to stay with a non synthetic because of its properties

I was also told that syn runs colder but it holds in the sludge that will accumulate over time

any thoughts?

Don't like Mobil for polictical reasons. There is nothing wrong with their products that I know of.

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

In a turbo car you want a good synthetic, if you want a synthetic that is really good at cleaning use Shell... A synthetic will not necissarily "run cooler" but it will stand up to the high temperatures better... So would you like a conventional oil to reach the temperatures in which it starts to cookin the turbo, or run a synthetic that will stay fluid...

I have heard running a conventional oil in the V6 is perfectly fine, I dont due to the higher temperatures my oil experienced (250ºF at times) but if I did not hit such high temperatures I would use a conventional oil later in the engines life (most likely ahigh mileage oil)... In a turbo car I have always used Synthetic due to the heat produced by the turbo...

Anything that is VW 502.xx spec is fine to use. Fully synthetic is a must with the 1.8t. Whoever says not to use full synthetic with that engine should be burried up to their neck wherever scorpions breed.

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

haha good tip 1.8Tee

I agree that with a turbo synthetic should always be used ... during the auto rx cycle I can only run "dino" and not a synth

but when I am complete synthetic is goin back in for sure

I only use http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...yzj/mobil1.jpg 5w40 motor oil and a Mobil 1 High Endurance Oil Filter and also fully synthetic Mobil 1 gear lube in my 96 A4 Quattro.

Perks of working for http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...yzj/mobil1.jpg

I use chevron 5w40 synthetic - 502 spec so its good.

Even with synthetic and OEM filters, I change it every 3 months/3k miles (usually ends up 3 months and 600-1000 miles because I drive my other cars more)

Just like some should walk into any VW/Audi service department and see all the Passats and A4's in for engine failure due to sludging up fromrunning non synthetic oil. Full Synthetic wont sludge up and bake onwhen its cooking inside turbo's and and sitting in blazing hot oil pans and other parts of the engine.

Pentosin 5W40 synthetic from ECS Tuning.
Changed every 3K miles.

Im surprised more people dont use Pentosin. Its very reasonably priced even with ECS's high shipping costs. Good stuff too, I ordered some a few weeks ago and am running it right now. Im usuallya religious Amsoil user though.

some swear by it and other say that they have noticed lower oil temps while running mobil 1 or amsoil and cleaner looking oil after they drained

just rumors iv'e heard over on the zine but im going to be trying it since a buddy of mine got a hookup with a couple of oil change packages from ECS

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

Hmm.. Id think that there would be too many variables to say for sure one way or the other if any of that is true. Unless there areconclusivetest results or more detailed data about each oils properties etc. Interesting though.

Usually penzoil or quaker state.

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

I've read some of the 1.8t's problems are due to placement of the oil lines for the turbo. I wouldn't use anything but synth in a 1.8t, but honestly, the crap that castrol is the only one to use is just plain ignorant. Castrol PAYS VW/Audi for their endorsement, and Syntec (except for GC 0w30) is a group 3 oil... using dino base stocks.

Lets get back on topic here... he's got a 2.8, he doesn't NEED a synthetic per se, but I say keep using it.

SMoLiK 01-06-2007 04:40 PM

RE: What kind of engine oil do you use?

Oil coming out clean is not a way to judge how well it lubricates, stands up to heat, etc. It coming out dirty could mean that it is actually cleaning your engine, picking up crap other oil left behind...

Castrol Synthetic 5-30 in winters and 10-40 in summertime....
Change it every 5k along with the Bosch big filter

how about pennzoil 5w-30 for winter and 10w-30 for summer. Of course penn syntethic. is that ok?
schucks is having a good deal right now. its about 6 bucks per case.

btw, just a reminder, i have a 96 a4 quattro.

thanks

I wouldn't have a problem running it with a shorter OCI, maybe 6k...
