i forget the specific term for it but its some kind of vacum regulator for the fuel system.

No, it's a check valve thats part of the vacuum system. I have no idea what it does but mine broke and my car had a bad boost leak because of it (You could hear a LOT of air coming out of there!) Here is a pic:

So we used OnePoint8Tee's temporary method of fixing it by wrapping it in electrical tape:

It works for a while. I need to go buy a new one but for now it works great. No more boost leak even at 17-18 psi. Just make sure to wrap it really well.

kind of off topic, but where can I find the audi rings on the engine cover? the previous owner seems to have had a need to rip them off and hang them on his wall. ive searched and nothing.

I used plumbers tape, used for sealing pipe threads. Its real stretchy and form fitting. But, whatever works! Mine is still holding up, ticking away like it should.
