What would you do.....
kick him in teh nuts (i would bet the crap out of him but im small and not very strong). RThen i would have him arrested for attemoted vandialsim after he was "roughed" up a bit. Then pay the guys in jail to do some **** to him.
there's not much you can do, within the limits of the law. odds are that someone who is out breaking into cars probably has a higher threshold for violence than you do. keep in mind that the use of excessive force can instantly turn you from a victim into a criminal defendant. personally, I would follow this person to their car if they had one, take down their plate number and call 911.
My torts professor in law school told me that the absolutely worst thing you can do is try and put someone under citizen's arrest. If you don't follow the letter of the law 100%, then you could be liable for False Imprisonment, even if the guy committed a crime against your property just moments before.
It's just like the law here in Australia. There was this guy hassling my ex all the way from the train station to her HOUSE every now & then, an extroverted stalker type I guess. We went to the police station together.......... the one where I have spent a few nights here & there at, been charged at a few times at, never convicted though.... Helps when mummy is a manager of a Law Firm.
Anyway, needless to say I was in a great mood when we walked in to that place, but after 15 minutes talking with the sargeant about what to do, he inadvertantly told me that if I caught this guy hassling my girlfriend and I started to hit him... He pretty much told not to stop until the guy stopped breathing. He said, quote "it's a helluva lot easier getting off assualt and murder charges when there is no living victim" & considering you get 12 years here for Assault causing grevious bodily harm & you get 8 years for a murder of the emotional type... IF CONVICTED. I liked my chances. But the guy got arrested 2 nights later sexualkly assaulting some poor girl in the car park of the train station. . . . . Lucky he got jail, I tell you.
