Hey i am in the market seriously for an a4 and i knew if i came here i could get some honest and educated answers that i didnt know the answer to... i definately want the a4 1.8t quattro and i am looking to buy within the year range of 98-01 and i was wondering which models are better or which models are having the most trouble...i know new would be better but if theres anything any of you would like to throw out there go ahead. also what milage does this car start to have maintence troubles and what mileage would not be good to get as a used car.... anything you can help me with would be greatly appreciated!.... thanks hope to own one soon to join you all!!!

Ok.... this is a bit frustrating. You could get some info by searching the archives.

55+ K miles is the border. After that, larger items need to be maintained/replaced/repaired/upgraded. For example, many timing belts need to be replaced around 60K. Control arms are an evil necessity when it comes to the Audi's. By that I mean, they need to be regularly checked for wear and usually need a replacement at some time.

Your choices between years do not have any significant differences that I know of - any other colleagues here can chime in if I've forgotten something.

 

the difference in years is basicaly cosmetic ie..changed to one peice headlights in 99.5 changed rear decklid in 97 numorous wheel changes, tails ect..

Good point, but I don't know of any issues that make that distinction a plus or a minus. It's just a modern feature.

 

The 2001 & 2002 were recalled fot ignition coils. Make sure they were replaced. Check Consumer Reports April issue for reliability of models.

 

Thanks guys, but also what are the ponies for each year?...do they vary or stay the same...i thought a 2001 is 170 hp...is 2000 only 150? that will greatly effect my purchase... and also what is the hp you get out of different stages of turbo upgrades..like i have heard that stage 3 will get you about 300hp or so....????

 

Yes... 2001 went to 170hp.

Stages are subjective to those that package the parts. In short, as more performance parts are added to the engine package, hp increases.
The engine has the potential for getting 300+hp with enough mods.
