Hello everyone,

I need help determining which wheel bearing needs to be replaced. OK here we go, the noise is consistent when I am driving forward with steering wheel being in the middle. Now when I make a left hand turn the noise WORSENS(grinding noise, hummining noise worsens) and then when I make a right hand turn it seems to get alot better and the noise is not half as bad until the steering wheel is back straight to its normal position. I am thinking the rear passenger but have no idea since it is hard to determine while driving. Thanks for your time. PLEASE HELP!

 

jack up each side of the car and try to spin each wheel by hand. You might be able to figure out which one it is that way...

its definitely on the passenger side, when the noise happens, does the steering wheel and console vibrate, or does your seat vibrate? if the steering column is shaking/vibrating then its most likely the front passenger. if your seat is vibrating, then its most likely coming from the rear passenger.

 

You should be able to hear if it's coming from the front or rear of the car while driving in a straight line. Since the noise worsens when you turn left, this indicates that the bad bearing is on the right side of the car. The reason it changes when you turn is because turning the car shifts the weightof the vehicle to the opposite side- when you turn to the left, more weight is transferred to the right-side wheels, putting greater stress on the bearing, and causing the bad one to make more noise. Likewise, turning right shifts weight to the left-side wheels, releasing some stress on the bearing, and decreasing the noise.

A good way to check for sure is to jack up each wheel off the ground one at a time, grab the tyre at both sides and see if you can wiggle it back and forth. Whichever wheel (or wheels) can be moved in this way has a bad bearing.
