I can hear a whirring noise coming from the petrol tank of my A4 (2.0 petrol 2002 model). It sounds like there's an electric motor running near the petrol tank and can be heard whether the car is or isn't running.

There doesn't seem to be any difference in performance nor is there a warning light flashing.

Any thoughts what is might be?
