Default White sludge?

I have a 97 2.8l with 102k.

Ever since I bought the car I've been noticing some white sludge on the oil cap. I had a similar problem with this on a older car and it was from the previous owner rarely changing the oil. It eventually went away on my old car since I keep up with oil changes, but was intrested to here what you guys thought about this?

The one time I've had this problem (on an old muscle car), the coolant was seeping into the oil. I ended up getting rid of that motor anyways, since the rings were shot and it wasn't worth rebuilding.

Yeah usually white crap on your oil cap is coolant.

When you changed the oil was it kind of milky (like a cappucino)?

Have you noticed a loss of coolant?

Water or Coolant in your Oil... Bad Head Gasket, sounds like.

When we had a huge rain fall one day, my buddy got ran into a puddle ('94 Honda Civic, H22A Swap), and the intake sucked up water. We got it to the shop, and drained the oil... It had already turned into chocolate milk (Water sucked in through the oil breather connected to the intake pipe, the water in the engine wasn't a problem, there wasn't enough to bend a rod), so we changed the oil, and gave it a start... *PING*... Bye, bye rod bearing. [:'(]

Anyway, it sounds like you've got a bad Head Gasket... Run a Compression Test and report back with numbers. Also, check your Coolant Reservoir, and see if there's Oil in there. If so, it's definately a Head Gasket.

Well when I did my last oil change nothing came out milky or unusual. I checked my coolant and that seems to be just fine. I decided to pull the head covers off and the tops of them were filled with this milky sludge. I then I pulled the oil breathers connected to the intake pipe and the white sludge was on the whole 1/3 bottom of those tubes.

So I basically went threw and cleaned out the head and the tubes. My guess is that their was condensation and the previous owner never checked or cared. Its been almost a week since I cleaned it out and everything seems to be running fine... my MPG actually seems to be a little higher also (But I'll check that after a few cycles). So I'll be keeping a eye on it to see if this continues.
