Why is the A/C always on?
Hi Forum,
I was test driving a 2002 A4 Avant with a 3.0. This had all the bells and whistles, including dual zone AC. I could not get the A/C to turn off unless the cabin fan is off. Is this normal? I live in an area where AC is not needed except for 20 days out of the year. I'd rather have the power. Should I expect this on a B6 with a turbo as well?

I'm not sure what the 2002 controls are like, but they're probably similar to my 2001. I can hit the economy or off button to turn off the A/C. Or if it's on auto I can hit the auto button again and it will toggle off.

It is sort of confusing because there is no button that says "A/C" on it. But it should say in the owners manual what temp the compressor shuts off at. But even if you have it on auto with the temp at 80 degrees, the compressor can turn on to stablize humidity in the cabin - Something like that, I remember reading it in my owners manual.

20 days a year????
Just remove the whole ac compressor! And the rest of it! You'll lose like 70 lbs, some drag on the pulley system, and you wont have to worry about reading the manual.
Thats what I would do!
