Why there is an open hole under the door panel?
Story:
I had problems with my speakers (non-Bose) before and dealer could not find problems so I decided to replace them by myself. The speakers came with crossover box. Since I do not have space for the crossover box on the door panel, I put it inside the door (behind the speaker in the door). Everything worked great until recently.
Problem:
I noticed one of the twiters on the driver side door is having strange static sound lately. Sometimes I will even loose sound for very short time. I thought the wire is come loose so I took the door panel off this evening to check it out.
Found:
After I took the panel off, all wires were connected tightly except I found water on the wires and crossover box (we had thunderstorm this afternoon). I then realized there is an open hole on the door. If you open your door (any doors, use driver side door for example), you will find an open hole on the door (not the plastic door panel but the actual door, the matel part) right under the speaker. I guess the water were came from the hole.
Question:
What is that open hole does? Can I put tape or some kind of pad to block it? I hope the hole is not for drain the water; otherwise, I have to find a way to re-wire the crossover box or cover it with plastic bag or something.
Thanks for all your input.

Just a guess, but it's probably a drain hole to let water out that gets between the window and the door panel.
Your best bet is to waterproof your speaker installation.
The speaker on my drivers side door gets flaky when it rains too, so it's probably water related too. One of these days I'll pull the panel off and see what's going on.

when i was a car audio installer any time that i mounted the crossover box in the door i either wraped it in plastic wrap and taped it good or i taped the crap out of it to keep water out because water can really screw with crossovers and if you fry it good luck finding a new one with out buying a whole new pair of speakers just a little advice
