So I have been looking through all the forums and it would seem most New Englanders with audis are puting on winter tires, I have always went with a good all season tire, is there any really good reason to to run the winter tires over the all seasons..

 

All-seasons are good.

Snow tires are better.

If your all-seaons are rated well for the snow, and have a good bit of tread left on them, you'll be fine. If you throw on some snowtires, you'll be an UNSTOPPABLE TANK WHO SCOFFS AT MOTHER NATURE WHEN SHE DUMPS 3 FEET OF SNOW ON YOU! "BRING IT ON!" YOU'LL SAY WITH A SMILE, AS YOU GLIDE THROUGH THE SNOW-COVERED STREETS OF YOUR TOWN, ON YOUR WAY TO DELIVER PRESENTS TO ORPHANS ON CHRISTMAS EVE!!!

Whew, got a little carried away there. Can't wait for some snow!

but what if i dont want two full sets of rims and tires? i think im gonna go with the all seasons or all season performance tires on my stock rims, im interested in seeing the difference between some all seasons and the performance tires that i bought the car with

 

If you don't want 2 full sets of rim/tires, then you'll have to pay to have them swapped on and off the same set of rims.

In my opinon...buy some cheap steel wheels and mount some snow tires on them. If you rotate 2 sets of tires off the same set of rims, you'll be paying for a mount and balance twice a year....which will end up being around 40-50 bucks each time. AND you'll be waiting in line with the hundreds of other people who need to change tires when the seasons change, so you might end up waiting a day or two depending where you go.

With that logic applied, the steel wheels will pay for themselves after 2-3 years. Plus you'll have the conveniece of being able to throw on your summer alloys/winter steel wheels whenever you feel like it.

And there's definitely a difference between performance all seasons and dedicated summer tires...but if you're not going to be driving your car hard or going to track events, you might not notice.

 

i think what i will do is get some all season for my stock rims, then when i have enough money i will go with some new rims and some performance tires, i live in seattle and the performance tires i have now are starting to worry me with all the rain we get and my minimal tread depth, the only sad part of it is that my car has the sport package so i dont want loose that awesome cornerning ability i love so much
