Default Yet another help me pick my A4 thread...

Hey folks, I'm a newb, first post, etc. That beings said I've been searching and browsing for a few days so no search ****'s please. [sm=americanasmiley.gif]

I'm looking for an 02 Avant with a manual trans. I can't decide between the 1.8T and the 3.0. This is what I got so far, just looking for peoples comments.

1.8T
+fuel economy
+$1000 in APR mods gets 235hp/275lb-ft
+lighter
+common parts

3.0
+6 speed
+real leather
+reliability? no sludge issues

How does the APR modded car drive as a daily driver? I don't mind turbo lag, my dad's 04 WRX is a blast. I don't like the wait, wait, wait, BANG sensation of all the power at once. How smooth is the APR chip?

How do you guys like the 6 speed? I can't track down a Avant with one. I think I'm gonna have to test drive a sedan to try it out until I can track one down.

there is no lag w/ a k03... its about the size of your fist.....

the power curve is pretty smooth on an APR...

what is the $1000? exhuast/chip? or chip/injectors?

I wouldn't concider the real leather a plus since it gets dirty and looks old alot sooner than the leatherette

as for the sludge program as long as you do all you maintance and is done at a Audi dealer you are covered

the 3.0 timing belt change will cost you your first born

once you get the chip you will want more and more then the fun begins

I think it was in 04 thta the 1.8T came with a 6 speed also

The oil sludge issue has been dealt with by upgrading to a larger oil filter (the stock filter in the 05 A4 1.8Ts). With the larger filter, good oil, and 5k miles or less changes you'll be fine. With the 3.0 you're going to be stuck if you want to mod it without spending a ton of cash whereas the 1.8T has tons of potential for relatively little money. Also with the APR kit you're talking about you'll be faster than a 3.0 and will have still spent less money on your car.

The catback exhaust also looks very sexy on APR's site. [sm=wootwoot.gif]

I still can't decide. I think it is going to come down to which one I can find used. The stick avants are a tough find.

All the 03 1.8T's I've seen are 5 speeds.
