Default '00 2.8L V6 starting and driving issues

Hey guys,
New to the forum here and I was really hoping someone might have run into this in their past as my audi technician has no clue specifically what is wrong with my car, without throwing random parts at it and I do not have that kind of money.

First off when I go to start it in the morning or after it has time to cool down I must crank it for over 4 seconds, shut it off and crank again to get it to start. For a few years now that was the only problem.

Now, if i decelerate and hit the throttle while driving it starts to miss and chug for a couple of seconds then it finally accelerates. Some times when it does this I get a single backfire. It also sometimes backfires while idling at a traffic light.

Just recently (today and yesterday) sometimes when I put it in reverse and do not even hit the gas it chugs or idles roughly in reverse.

A friend of mine whose sister has a similar generation 2.7T, was having almost the same problem and it turned out to be a tube coming off the fuel pump that had a small hole in it.

If someone knows exactly what it is that would be great but if there is no way to narrow it down maybe a list of things to try in order of price from cheapest to most expensive... Hell maybe I can get my audi tech to swap out parts from a healthy donor car to figure out what it is.

Thank you all in advance, hopefully my future posts aren't so dire.

First start by checking all the vacuum lines. A vacuum diagram is located under your hood. Just follow the diagram and check all the hoses. You can pick up 10 feet of 5/32" vacuum hose from a local part shop and it should cover the entire car less the line back to the gas tank.

Then check the secondary air pump line from the pump itself - located below the passenger side at the side of the engine - to the air box and to the block.

Most likely you have some damage on one or more of these lines. I would start with that first. Next is the MAF sensor, but try the lines first.

I read on here somewhere that if you unpluging the MAF and the problem goes away the MAF is bad... did I read this right?

not necessarily. do like hxgaser said, check the vac lines first. replace any of them that look worn, old, or brittle. then move on the the MAF, spray it with MAF cleaner (the auto parts store will hook you up).

then check your fuel pump relay (bad relay can cause P0411 code).
