Question '04 A6 does not up-shift when it is cold....

Hey Guys,

I have an '04 A6 with 47K on it. I baby it I never drive it hard.

When the shifter is in manual program, it does not up shift to 2nd gear when it is cold (it's like mid 30's F here in Vegas now) I have to manually up- shift then it works just fine shifts about 2000 rpm to 2nd.

Now I just noticed that when I start the car cold and put it in drive there is no up-shift to 2nd either....never raised the rpm above 2300 cold. I manually up-**** than I switch it back to D than everything works just fine.

So in one word when the car-transmission is cold there is no up- shift ,
if I stop for a while than restart it it works just fine.

Where should I look at?

Any help appreciated Guys,

This is normal, the car will hold the gears when the engine is cold to help it warm up.

Then my next car will be an Audi again, not a bimmer.

Yeah, when cold, mine will shift 1-2 at about 2500-3000 rpm. Its normal, helps get heat in the engine. Stay with Audi, no BMW!!!

No upshift to help warmup?? LOL You gota be kidding!

The upshift delay is due to cold emissions control. It is a PITA and can be hazardous when on slippery roads. But Audi's are made for cold snowey days so a little delay is not all that bad...

No, I'm not kidding the ECT is also an input to the TCM and TCC,to determine shift points. Shift points are changed to help aid in warm up. We already have the air injection to help reduce HC and CO emissions.

I assume the emissions control you are assuming is helping warm up the Cat?

Blah! I have both! An A6 2.8LQ and a 540i. Both cars have pros and cons. One con of the A6 is that it loves to leak oil.

But back on topic, it's normal for the car to hold first gear longer on cold starts.

I know both have pros and cons. I really dont have any problems with BMW, its just that thins being an Audi forum, I must brag...
and yeah, oil leaking bastards!

"To help the engine and catalyst warm up quickly
for reduced emissions, the transmission may
delay upshifts somewhat, resulting in
momentarily higher engine speeds. This is not
an operating problem, it’s simply an intelligent
system doing its job to manage emissions and
fuel economy." - VAG

I wasnt kidding!

How in the world delaying the upshift and keeping the engine reved up helps the fuel economy?

High revs do exactly opposite for fuel economy. Why do manual cars have a better fuel economy? The answer is simple: because you can glide it faster in the gear, when you want and hear/feel that you have to shift, not when a chip "lets" you do it.

Simple, it delays up shift to to help warm the engine up, cuz when your car is cold its in whats called "open" loop where it ignores your 02 sensor, so it trys to warm up car faster so it get into "closed" loop so the ECU can use info from the 02 sensor to help control fuel. Since when fuel is cold it doesn't vaporize as quick so when your engine is cold you're using a LOT of fuel but not necessarily burning it all.

Sorry bud, but have you been in a cave lately? They have auto trans that can shift much faster than we can...
