1999 A6 Quattro
Does the left brake light still function normally?
Other things to check are the CV boots, the differential fluid levels on the front, center and rear differentials. If you have an automatic transmission you should change the ATF and filter. Check the suspension for worn parts. Clean the air filter box.

You mean the right rear brake light?
If the left works normally then you probably have trouble in the directional signal circuit.
If not - check the left bulb, replace it if needed and if it stays on look at the brake light switch. otherwise your in for some real fun...

You can check every little electrical component if you want to but it wouild be better if you answered the question about the left brake light working first and then check the switch if both are on. After that you have the directionals, and hazzard circuit, before going after every little electrical component.
PS When checking every little electrical component , don't forget the glove compartment light. LOL

You will need the brake light wiring diagram for a 1999 A6 Quattro with the C5 chassis. The Audis I have are all C4 chassis, so the wiring is different.
However, if the brake light switch were causing your problem, then both left and right rear brake lights would be on even with the ignition turned off. However, you say only the right brake light is on. Check the left brake light socket for corrosion where the contacts touch the bulb base.
