Default 1999 A6 SHUTS OFF!!! if you dont hold down the accelerator

The car starts fresh in the morningbut after 2-5mins it shuts off, itstill starts but shuts off if you dont hold down the accelarator.

So you have to hold the pedal down to 2000 RPM so it doesnt shut off, its an Automatic 2.8 Quattro.

the check light is on...what could be wrong??

Go to autozone and get your codes checked and post the fault codes on the forum and we will tell you what to do.

You can either go to autozone and buy a code reader for like 70 bucks or so, or if you wanna step it up to full diagnostics down load the VAG COM software to your laptop from www.ross-tech.com and buy the appropriate cable, and there is no limit to what you can diagnose.

Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. I would check to make sure nothing is loose or apart, or possibly check your air flow sensor.
