Default 2000 A6 90K maintenance

Greetings!

My 2000 A6 just hit 90k miles and I remember it's a big one, so I called the local dealer... I was told that I need to replace the timing belt, water pump and thermostat, etc, which cost $2000+ in total. I understand the T-belt/water pump always get replaced together, but what is this thermostat? Where can I find a complete list of things to do for 90K maintenance? Does this sound a reasonable price? If not, where can I go for an alternative? (I live in Philadelphia area.) Many thanks.

what engine do you have?

the thermostat is behind the timing belt, next to the water pump. when the coolant warms up, the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow through the block. Its is standard to replace during the timing belt and water pump job.

$2000+ is in the right ball park. Service at the dealership is always more expensive primarily due to higher labor costs. You should have no problem finding an indy shop in the Philly area (or you can drive to Baltimore and have RAI do it)

My engine is 2.7T. Thanks for the info, now I understand the thermostat part. What do you mean by "indy shop"? Is it just one of those smaller shops? Any other things that I need to pay special attention at this mileage?

I just got a quote from a local shop for my 2002 90k 2.7T. They are doing the Timing Belt, Hydraulic Tensioner, and new water pump. They will check the serpentine belt, radiator hoses and thermostat.

They have the timing belt kit at $390, the Hyd. tensioner at $280, water pump at $200 and then labor. Looking online it seems like I'm getting jacked on the parts...thoughts? And any site I should look at as my go-to site for parts?

Hmm,

They are missing at least 4 essential parts.

Look at Blauparts kits and compare.

BTW - there is nothing to be checked on the thermostat => replacement is a must!

Blauparts seems like a nice place to go for parts. Too bad, my local shops refuse to use parts that I supply, they only order parts from the dealer.

@nemohm What 4 parts are they missing? I know with the timing belt kit comes with the idler pulley, tensioner, cam seals and crank seal. I will make sure they do the thermostat; I'm really hoping they don't have to do the radiator hoses.

I really don't use the turbo that much (in terms of really slamming the gas - once every 2 weeks) so I'm hoping that cuts down on wear and tear and replacement needs. I just love the ride, comfort and space. Don't really need to get to 60 that fast but it's nice to have the option!

My Blau kit just arrived with the "advanced kit .. " lots of goodies in there including the cooland and other essentiols .. only 345.00 .... but i only payed 1G for the whole car so didn't want to spend much more for the parts..
