Default 2000 Avant Trans Problem

2000 A6 Avant Q
My transmission seems to be slipping when I am driving around town.(like it doesn't know what gear it wants to be in) Feels like a manual trans with a clutch going. When I step on the gas the rpms go up before I start to move.
If I shift manually it seems to be better. The trans feels strong when I step on the gas hard and drive.
My question is, Any Idea what is causing this and can an Independent mechanic possibly fix this? Any recommendations in Essex County? I used to go to Andy King of R&A Applied arts in Lyndhurst when I had VWs, but he has dissapeared.
Any guidance is appreciated.
This is the first real problem I have had with the car since buying it 2 years ago.

Chris,

The Trans sounds like it is on the way out. Putting the car into tip mode slightly incresses the line pressure in the trans. This helps the clutches hold better. Or you might want to check the fluid next time you change your oil. Mine was low I had to top it off. The transmissions are not suposed to eat fluid but mine did you might have as well

So I had the Trans oil changed and it was really burnt and grey. The car drove fine for 2 days, and now it is back to the same symptoms/

Just curious, how many miles are on the transmission? Has the fluid ever been changed other than a couple of days ago?
