Are you sure you didn't drain the ATF? That drain plug is very close to the oil plug on the bottom of the cars. If this happened you have an empty tranny and overfull engine, assuming you put oil back in since you said you started the car.

Hello, I have a 2001 Audi A6 4.2. The tranmission has started giving me problems. Currently the car is in limp mode and can only be driven in a certain gear. Its a transmission safe mode. The car has been tested and there are internal problems in the transmission that need to be fixed.
How much do you think this repair will cost?
I would need the transmission rebuilt. I received an estimate for a new transmission at $5000. Way too much not worth it.
If its too pricy I would probably end up having to sell the car the way it is with transmission needing repair. How much money do you think I get for a car in that condition.
Second- (and to address the reverse gear issue mentioned in thread) the -24 and other variants of this ZF trans have reverse drum issues - I had mine rebuilt due to reverse drum failure for ~$3900 w/an 18 mo warranty by an independent shop. In my case, the car was worth keeping w/only 75K miles.
