RE: 2002-2004 A6 sport line
S-line package on a A-class adds some performance options, but does not get as extreme as the S-class vehicles.
My A6 Sline has stiffer suspension and bigger brakes, probably other stuff as well.
I have only seen the A6 S-line in 2.7T, never a 4.2 model.

Based on my reading of the Audi Model Guide (Click here to go to it), the differences are as follows:
In 2002, you could order an A6 with a "sport" package. It added higher performance wheels, sport seats, and a more agressive suspension (lowered by 2 cm, 30% stiffer springs, 40% increased damping on the shocks).
In 2003, the sport suspension became standard. As such, the sport seats and wheels became separate options (no longer part of a package).
In 2004, the only 2.7T offered was the S-Line. It has a horsepower boosted version of the 2.7T (265 HP instead of the usual 250 HP), more agressive wheels, a spoiler, special badging, and -- surprisingly -- NOT the sport seats (too bad -- they're a favorite part of my 2001 2.7T sport package).

RE: 2002-2004 A6 sport line
I stand corrected! (Boston Driver has probably forgotten more about A6es than I know.) Weird though -- the Audi product guide only listed the S-Line 2.7t for 2004.
So does this basically mean that the S-Line is a standard, 2004 2.7t + a spoiler + speical wheels + 15 HP (or was that on ALL 2.7s that year?) + special badging + NO sport seats? Did they offer a sport package for the standard 2.7 or was this THE sport upgrade?

S-line package added the spoiler, the badging on the grille and rear doors, the 15 extra ponies under the hood, and the 18" Ultrasport wheels (9-spoke RS4 style) wtih summer rubber. Sport seats, 17" S-line wheels with all season tires, sunshades, cold weather package, etc. etc. etc. were all optional.
