Default 2002 A6 120K - purchase or keep looking?

I am thinking about purchasing a 2002 A6 sedan with 120,000 miles from a guy who buys at auction and flips cars. The price is $6,400. I test drove the car last night and the feel/handling is amazing. I am coming from a 1999 E320 and I think the A6 blows it away (and I loved that car).

After reading several reviews, it seems I should pass on this car because I can't get any info on its history.

Please let me know your thoughts. After driving, I definitely want an A6 - I just want to minimize my exposure to the nasty maintenance issues I've read about in so many reviews for this car.

Any/all thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

JV

Hmm the price kinda seems average if he's selling at auction price, but id first CarFax the car and check whats up with it before buying it because who knows. Other then that seems like a nice deal.

skip.

There is too much that is unknown. Was the timing belt changed at 65k and needs replacing again soon, or was is changed at 90k-105 and will be good for a few years, or was it one of those idiots who never changed it and it's going to snap on your way home?

If you can get him to include the cost of a timing belt change in the price, and get it inspected by an audi mechanic then I say why not.

What engine?

2.8/3.0/2.7/4.2?

$6,400 is about $2,000 to much for one with known history and way too much for unknown. He probably paid $3,000 - $4,000 for the vehicle which is about right.

I bought a 2002 3.0 with 80K miles for $6K. To me the price depends on overall condition along with maintenance issues. Car is in perfect aesthetic and functional condition inside and out. I am chanigng the timing belt myself although it is in good condition. This one has all major maintenance done except timing belt. It really helped me to have the carfax in making the final decision to buy. I may not have gotten the absolute lowest price but in the end i think i got my moneys worth.
Sounds to me like even with a good carfax report stating maintenance has been done you should still offer less for the car.

Johann2.7t - you probably paid a bit too much for a 2001 with 110K but it was not too far off.

Hotdog - about right for 80K and a really good 2002
