Default 2002 Audi A6 turns off while at stop lights

my 2002 audi a6 with 125,000 miles has now started to stall out while i am at a traffic light. it takes 3-6 turns of the key to try and get it restarted. anyone have similar problems.

i am beginning to hate my Audi ownership experience.

What engine???
what is the idle like rough? How about at increased RPM?
will it stay running in your driveway after kick down?

Things to look for/inspect.
Vacuum lines, if you have not replaced them they should have all been replaced at least 30K miles ago so they are probably disintegrated by now.

MAF, clean it check, clean or replace air filter and inspect the hose clamps on the air intake. My A8 has a report from previous owner stating it died at traffic lights. Due to a mechanic not re clamping one of his intake air tubes(after MAF sensor). MAF can not work that way, MAF may be your problem. Try warming car up in driveway until it is stalling then disconnect the MAF and see if it stays running. It is located inside the first tube after the air filter box, to disconnect it just unplug the harness. Do not touch it. you can get a spray at any auto store to clean it.

While you are at the auto store have them scan for fault codes for free. Maybe something will turn up.

3.0 quattro

the idle during normal operation is fine. a few times the EPC light comes on and stays on and the idle is rough. up and down significantly nearly 250 RPM's.

in the driveway it will shut down after it sits not moving for 60 seconds or so.

i am an extreme novice when it comes to automobiles but figured this was a good way to get some direction so please help on the next question. what is MAF?

Focus on the MAF

MAF, Mass Air Flow sensor. It is a very delicate wire in a plastic housing that tells the computer how much air volume is coming through the intake tube. If it is not working correctly (sending a false signal because it is dirty or faulty) the engine will not be able to adjust the air/fuel mixture correctly causing stalling rough idle surging.

Sound familiar.

I would replace the air filter if needed, clean the MAF and see if that helps. Disconnect it and check for improvement if it improves after you clean it great. If not disconnect it if it improves replace it.

MAF is an acronym for Mass Air Flow sensor.

Start by going to Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, or Pep Boys and have your codes pulled. Ask someone there to scan your car for codes. Get the codes and post them here.

I am thinking bad coil pack/s.

ALSO clean the terminal pins by rubbing them with a nail file and put a little dialelectric grease on them.

If you do it yourself the only things that will give you a hard time are the right rear air filter box clip and the large spring clamps on the air tubes,

bend a long screwdriver on a 90 and you can relatch the back air fliter clip, Use a large set of pliers for the spring clamps. (water pump pliers or whatever)

Those were the days. Cast iron blocks and your repair kit inluded a Budwieser can, coat hanger and roll of duct tape.

How about a piece of old broom handle to replace a freeze plug?
