I bought a 2005 A6 3.2 about 3 months ago. Lately I have noticed a thumping noise under the car. Even when I turn off the engine the noise continues for a minute.

Anyone experienced this problem? Anyone have a clue what this could be?

 

It is the fuel filter. There has been a mandatory recall. Take it to the dealer and it will be replaced for free.

 

Thanks but only recall I could find for fuel pump was for the '03. Mine is 2005 A6 Quattro 3.2L and I couldn't find any recalls for that model.

 

I hope that this helps. I have pasted in below the top portion of the RVU. Unfortunately the formatting has been thrown off a little. However, you will see that it is for the 2005 A6 3.2 and is described as "Thumping, knocking or popping noise in fuel tank area".

Condition
This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:
Customer may report thumping, knocking, popping or similar noise emanating from fuel tank area during or shortly after driving.
This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect for 15 months from date of publication. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.
Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:
1. Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the IH code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.
2. Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.
3. Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.
4. Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in Dealer inventory prior to sale.

I started hearing a thumping noise when the car was in motion. Sounded like a thump-thump-thump as I road down the road. I had the car on a lift shaking and checking everything in the rear suspension. I then tapped the gas tank as found that the thumping noise was coming from inside the tank. Could yours be the same? What is it and how do I fix it?
