2011 a6 overheating

can i get help with overheating problem with my a6, driving on the freeway temp gauge shot up warning light came on to pull over shut off engine did that,before i tow toshop is ther anything that i can do?

1) Sucks to hear
2) Have you checked your coolant levels?
3) Do you have any coolant leaks?
4) When was the last time your replaced your thermostat?
