Default 2012 A6 3.0T cooling/AC fans stopped working - Fuses?

Hi...

Both of my cooling fans stopped working at the same time, VAG showing short to ground. I want to check the fuses but I have no idea where they are. Can anyone give me any information on where these may be located in the c7 models? I have a US left drive version, but I would think it would be similar to UK tho. I assume the fuses are in the engine compartment, but I can't find them. Any help MUCH appreciated!

Ok, I found the box, its under the ECM, which is under the washer fluid reservoir, which is under the plenum chamber cover. Now to see if the cooling fan fuse/fuses are actually in there and if anything is blown. If anyone has a fuse/relay diagram of the connections in that box, please share. Thanks!

Wow!

I just had my left side cooling fan go bad. After that was replaced, the repair tech found that the thermostat was bad, too! As a result, I was without my car for 6 days. And, this all occurred one week after I had the car in for it's 55K miles servicing.

In case anyone comes across this thread, I have resolution. Found the fuses, both 40A, both blown. Replaced with new 40 amp fuses and both fans operating properly, still working after about an hour. Maybe just a perfect storm of electrical overload, I literally got a call on bluetooth, closed the sunroof and auto-up on the windows, turned on the a/c, and had been sitting stationary in traffic in the heat for 15 minutes. Going to reset the codes with vag/com and see how it goes. If anyone needs help finding these fuses, let me know. They were not in the e-box under the ECM and washer reservoir. They were in a separate panel under the crossmember. Just about the most difficult location possible.

Two 40 amp fuses blown. Had to buy at the dealer.

panel is under the plenum cover and crossmember in the center rear of the engine compartment.

@mattbult,

Did your A6 overheat or did you only notice that the cooling fans were not working?

Mine overheated on the drive home from work. I had to stop and let things cool down. Later, I had it towed to the dealer for the repairs.

Hey Ray - Yes, it overheated. I didn't notice until the AC blew warm, looked at the guages, and the temp was buried. Shut it down and waited 10 minutes, started it up when traffic was moving again and was able to keep it moving/cool by staying on side streets and areas where I wouldn't get stuck. Got to a gas station and shut it down for 30 minutes while I waited for the traffic to die down and was fine for the ride home (though the warning said cooling system fault, shut the car down immediately).

Hey, the fuses were hard to find, two local audi dealers did not have them and no auto parts stores did. So if someone comes across this thread, the part number for the cooling ans ac fans for 2012+ audi a6 (and others, I'm sure) is N-104-249-02 (N10424902). My dealer wanted $12 each! Found them at VW dealer for $3.50, and online (generic littlefuse) for $0.49 at http://www.autohausaz.com/pn/n10424902.

Hey, can you tell me what the dealer diagnosis was? I was SHOCKED that they didn't even have the fuse in stock at TWO dealerships near my house. The first guy didn't even think they were audi. Glad its not the fans, they are over $1k each.

Default 40 AMP fuse

Fellas, thanks for all that you guys shared here. Two days ago I noticed that when I came to a long stop my AC no longer blew cold air. I looked under the hood and noticed that both my fans were not working. Prior to that though I noticed that only one fan worked, I just thought that the computer turned the second one on when it was hot enough. Back to the issue at hand, once I came across this forum I looked for my 40 amp fuses and discovered that they were both blown. Picked them up for 11 bucks and installed them. AC wokes like a champ now. I wouldn't have been able to have done it without this forum.

Thanks guys
Juan
